Ultrafast lasers represent one of the most advanced and transformative developments in modern photonics, characterized by their ability to generate extremely short pulses of light that typically last in the femtosecond (10⁻¹⁵ seconds) to picosecond (10⁻¹² seconds) range.

One of the defining features of ultrafast lasers is their ability to perform “cold” material processing. Because the laser pulse duration is shorter than the time it takes for heat to diffuse into surrounding material, the energy is confined to a highly localized region.
